A very Bowie day - Happy birthday David

David Bowie is a powerful musical force in our house. My other half is a massive fan and saw him live many more times than me. His career spanned half a century and he was innovating until the end. ![Mug](http://ift.tt/2j8SYrJ) His death last year came as a shock, but then he has been out of the public eye for some years. He last performed in 2004 when he had a heart attack. We had several events to mark his passing including going to Groeningen to see the David Bowie Is exhibition, the Bowie prom and visiting some of his haunts in Berlin on a family holiday. ![Tickets](http://ift.tt/2iZ4p7Z) Yesterday would have been his 70th birthday. We travelled to London to meet up with some friends who are also lifelong fans. First stop, after lunch, was the temporary theatre near Kings Cross station to see [Lazarus](http://ift.tt/2hmTtMI). It's an odd piece with a story based on [The Man Who Fell to Earth](http://ift.tt/1JiEE57) and includes lots of his songs spanning his career up to his last album. Michael C. Hall (TV's Dexter) plays the alien who hasn't managed to leave Earth. The set is an apartment with the band visible through the windows. The story is a little confusing with imaginary beings and a murderer, but I just went with it and enjoyed the experience. The cast did a great job, but I can't say I understood it all. I didn't get a shot of the theatre, so here's the amazing hotel building next door. ![Kings Cross](http://ift.tt/2j8Of9e) Then it was on to Brixton where we paid our respects at the mural near the station where so many gathered after his death. ![Mural](http://ift.tt/2iZccm3) Then on to the amazing old Brixton Academy for the Celebrating David Bowie gig. This consisted of many of the musicians who played with him getting back together along with various guest singers. ![Academy](http://ift.tt/2j8S3r4) The venue was packed with fans of all ages, but I suspect the average age was pretty high. A few were dressed up or had their faces painted with the Ziggy flash. We took our daughters along and they enjoyed it. I have to admit to not knowing who some of the guests were. The announcements were not always clear. We knew actor Gary Oldman was part of it and he did a good job on singing a couple of songs. ![Stage](http://ift.tt/2iYXI5O) There were a few 80s stars there including Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), Simon Le Bon (Duran Duran) and Joe Elliot (Def Leppard) as well as some much younger singers. Other people have taken much better video than I could have. I prefer to just watch the show anyway. The audience sang Happy Birthday at the end, as they did at Lazarus too. It was a great day and a worthy celebration of the man. RIP DB. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O65kb5A9rXo
