I listen to lots of podcasts to keep up with what's going on in various fields. I'm only an amateur musician, but [Bobby Owsinski's ](http://ift.tt/K3lBnB) Inner Circle gives me some insights into what's going on in the music industry. His [latest show](http://ift.tt/2hZmlxV) was a round-up of the last year and what's coming this year. ![Blockchain](http://ift.tt/2iXbNxB) Image from [Wikimedia](http://ift.tt/2hZgrwY) One item stuck out when he said that the blockchain for the music industry is dead. He seemed to say that is partly because it requires you to pay in Bitcoin, which is not necessarily true, and that blockchains can be edited and so lose their value. Hang on! What's that about? He doesn't elaborate, but I found [this article](http://ift.tt/2df2Z6R) about Accenture patenting a way to edit blockchains. That seems to go against what it was designed for, but they are saying it's a way to fix mistakes. It sounds like it wouldn't work in a true decentralised blockchain as there isn't just one copy and you have to deal with mistakes by issuing corrections somehow. I think Bobby is making some assumption that the Bitcoin blockchain is the only one out there, but it's just a technology. I've heard that various companies are [working on using blockchain](http://ift.tt/2edpr0q) as a sort of music database. The advantage of blockchain is that it is not centrally hosted and is harder to fake data than other approaches. My concerns with blockchain are about how scalable it is. The Bitcoin blockchain is already many gigabytes and will grow exponentially as adoption takes off. There are limits on how many transactions it can handle. I know the Steem version has been designed for better performance, but I don't know all the inner details. Blockchain is being talked about for all sorts of applications, but some of those don't really need a complete audit log, e.g. if just passing messages. Something like Bitcoin needs to be able to trace the complete history of every satoshi to prove that it was created and traded legitimately. Any thoughts on whether he's right? He's a musician and producer rather than a developer, so he may just be making false assumptions. Sometimes the world really needs experts. ![Verified](http://ift.tt/2ean2BS) http://ift.tt/eA8V8J http://ift.tt/2iI3HLI
