Just Like a Child

I look at this picture with a smile and chuckle at the mischief I see playing on the grass. Then I see the face of the gentleman standing on the grass. He looks so serious and is unaware of the laughter going on beneath him. It is not a bad ideal to seek to play well. But, do we miss playing ideally by playing so well? I listened to a podcast once where a man was interviewing two highly acclaimed musicians who taught at an academy. The man raved to these fellows how entertaining their work was. They nodded and thanked him but with little satisfaction from the encouragement. He was surprised at their reactions and inquired. The musicians confessed that there was no joy in what they did anymore. They had studied and learned so much of the art that is was no longer an art but a job. Do we do the same with our dreams? In the midst of seeking what we want do we miss the joy in the seeking? Perfection is not the goal. Have you ever seen how grumpy the people are who pursue perfection? The goal is joy. That does not necessarily come by being the best. It does develop from a life knowing that the climb is what we must embrace. The difference is contentment. That is not settling. It is a childlike wonder amidst the doldrums of work we are doing. ## “An adventure is only an inconvenience rightly considered. An inconvenience is only an adventure wrongly considered." -G.K. Chesterton ## None of us chose our dream because it was easy. We chose it for the joy it would bring to us. The smile on our face is evidence enough. We lose sight of the path when the brush is so thick. It is easily regained by becoming like a child again. What does that look like you say? It is remembering how good it will feel when we stand on the other side of problems and look back at what we achieved. A child never bothers with how. They focus on why. If they want the cookie, a child will ask for it a thousand times, and then once more if it wins them the prize. Once we realize this it opens the world of possibilities to us. We no longer settle for goals that are mediocre and within our grasp. The ideas that scare us for their immensity suddenly become believable. We regain that joy of childhood and sense of adventure that called us into a world of unknowns. The call to wonder captures us like a gentle blanket as we sit on grandpa's lap and listen to stories of daring men and women. We begin to dream like my grandfather instructed me to dream when I was a boy. ##
"It takes as much energy to dream big, as it does to dream small. Why not dream big?"
